Fully Funded Global Health Fellowship 2026 for African Public Health Professionals: Apply by 21 October
Public health professionals across sub-Saharan Africa have an opportunity to strengthen their expertise in outbreak preparedness and response through the Fellowship in Outbreak Readiness for Global Health Protection (FOR-GHP). The fellowship focuses on developing skilled professionals who can help their institutions and countries prepare for, manage, and respond to public health emergencies.
Funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Health under the Global Health Protection Programme (GHPP), the initiative uses a multiplier approach to build sustainable public health capacity across the region.
Applications are open, and interested candidates should submit their applications before the 21 October 2026 deadline.
About the FOR-GHP Fellowship 2026
The FOR-GHP Fellowship is designed to strengthen health emergency preparedness, response, and resilience across sub-Saharan Africa. It addresses the need for skilled professionals who can manage disease outbreaks, support public health systems, and contribute to the implementation of the International Health Regulations.
Natural and intentional disease outbreaks can threaten communities, health systems, and national development. The fellowship therefore seeks to equip local experts with practical knowledge and skills that they can share with colleagues and apply within their home institutions.
The programme is delivered through a consortium of established public health and research organisations, including the Africa Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET), the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM), the Robert Koch Institute, and Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH).
By combining digital learning with in-person activities, the programme aims to develop professionals who can strengthen local capacity and contribute to coordinated outbreak responses.
What Does the Fellowship Offer?
The FOR-GHP programme focuses on practical competencies and long-term professional collaboration. Its key objectives include:
Outbreak management training: Strengthening participants’ competencies in outbreak preparedness and response, with particular attention to One Health and global health security.
Digital and in-person learning: Using blended learning methods, including simulation exercises, to develop practical knowledge and response capabilities.
Leadership and facilitation skills: Preparing participants to become effective trainers, facilitators, multipliers, and leaders within their institutions and countries.
Knowledge sharing: Supporting fellows in developing context-specific teaching case studies and sharing their expertise with colleagues.
Regional collaboration: Promoting cooperation, knowledge exchange, and coordinated outbreak response through regional networks.
Long-term professional support: Building an active alumni network that encourages mentorship, collaboration, and continued peer learning.
The fellowship’s multiplier model is intended to extend the benefits beyond individual participants. Fellows are expected to use their knowledge and skills to support capacity strengthening in their professional environments.

The opportunity is intended for public health and related professionals working in sub-Saharan Africa. Based on the programme’s stated eligibility requirements, prospective applicants should meet the following criteria:

Why Should Public Health Professionals Apply?
The fellowship offers an opportunity for professionals to strengthen their knowledge of outbreak readiness while building networks with peers and institutions working in global health protection.
Participants can develop practical outbreak management competencies, improve their ability to facilitate training, and gain experience in approaches that connect human, animal, and environmental health through the One Health perspective.
The programme may be particularly relevant to epidemiologists, public health practitioners, biomedical professionals, researchers, and other eligible specialists who want to contribute to stronger disease surveillance, emergency preparedness, and response systems.
