Sophomore midfielder Jules Colchico celebrates her goal with her team during Sac State’s game against Cal State Bakersfield Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026. The Hornets end their seven-game winless streak and get their second shut out this season in a 2-0 win.
As the wind picked up, Sacramento State women’s soccer looked to snap its seven-game winless streak, and secure its first Big West Conference win against Cal State Bakersfield at Hornet Field on Saturday.
Both teams entered the match seeking their first conference win after four games.
Sac State came out attacking in the first half, leaving its footprint all over the match and creating opportunities in the Roadrunners’ final third. The Hornets capitalized in the 31st minute.
Junior forward Tierra Pickell received the ball down the left wing, and looked to send a cross into the box. Instead, the ball sailed toward the goal, where senior Roadrunner goalkeeper Allanah Blye punched it away, forcing a corner kick.
Junior forward Mia Jackson sent the ensuing corner into the box, where Blye punched the ball away toward senior defender Lexi Schroeder. Schroeder dribbled past a defender near the penalty arc, and struck a right-footed shot that deflected off a Roadrunner defender toward sophomore midfielder Jules Colchico.
Colchico struck a low, driven left-footed shot that slipped through Blye’s fingers and into the net, giving the Hornets a 1-0 lead.
“I really felt like because we have so many new players, it took us some time just to find our identity,” head coach Tim Strader said. “You could feel it come together against Long Beach last week and I thought today was just a continuation of that performance from last week.”

The goal marked Colchico’s first collegiate goal after missing her first two seasons due to injuries.
“To get to this point and be able to accomplish what I once prayed for means a lot to me,” Colchico said. “It’s just special for me, especially to be able to celebrate it with my teammates. It honestly just makes me really happy.”
The Hornets created additional scoring opportunities after the goal but were unable to capitalize, maintaining their 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Throughout the second half the Hornets searched for their second goal, after previous matches showed that a one-goal lead was not enough.
The Hornets remained in the driver’s seat, and created numerous chances in the Roadrunners’ final third through 25 minutes, but they struggled to capitalize.
This all changed in the 71st minute.
Senior midfielder Ellie Farber poked the ball away from a Roadrunner player near midfield, sending it toward Schroeder.
Schroeder collected the ball, and dribbled past one defender down the Roadrunners’ final third before entering the penalty area. She found space on the left side of the box and fired a left-footed bullet into the top-right corner of the net, extending the Hornets’ lead to 2-0.
“It was awesome just to see the ball go in the right corner,” Schroeder said. “I’ve been looking for a goal all year since I got changed from a forward to an outside back, so I had to hit the celly with the worm.”

Schroeder’s goal and assist marked her second three-point performance of the season. Her first came in the season opener against the University of the Pacific on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026, where she also recorded a goal and an assist.
Sac State held off the Roadrunners over the final 19 minutes in a shutout win, to secure its first three points in its program’s history in The Big West.
“Today was one of those performances that was a next women up mentality,” Strader said. “We had a couple players out today, so key reserves had to step up. I just think it shows the quality, the depth of this side, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
The Hornets outshot the Roadrunners 21-11, including 12 of them being on target compared to the Roadrunner’s two. Both totals were Sac States’s second highest totals on the season, trailing only its performance against Fresno State on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026.
Sac State has now put 86 of its 172 shots on goal this season, giving the Hornets a .500 shots-on-goal rate. The team currently leads The Big West in this category.
The Hornet’s two goals on Saturday has brought their season total to 20, their most in a season since 2019, in which they finished with 28.
Sac State improved to 5-3-5 and 1-1-3 in the conference. The Hornets win ended their seven-game winless streak and marked their first win since defeating Southern Utah University on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026.
“Start to finish, that was the performance that we’ve been looking for,” Strader said. “We know we’ve been close, it was finally nice to put a full 90 minutes together and see the group get a shutout as well.”
Bakersfield fell to 1-12-1 and 0-5 in the conference, extending its winless streak to nine games and its losing streak to five.
The Hornets will look to build off of the win and climb The Big West standings when they travel to face UC San Diego at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026.
