Sunday I’m in Love
Whilst Premier League fans are embittered by Manchester City’s creative accounting, those wishing for fiasco-free football have turned to the St Andrews Sunday League.
After four match weeks, it's last season’s winners, Botswana Meat Commission, who have impressed, again. Last Sunday, sitting atop the table, they edged the Strokers (5-4) in front of a modest crowd. Speaking after the game, Strokers centre-back Finlay Beattie reflected, “A Stroker never lets their head drop. Despite being four goals down, we put in an admirable comeback attempt, and just missed out on a juicy point.”
In another tight clash, Stroke FC continued their unbeaten season with a 3-2 win versus DLL. For DLL fans, the game proved yet another disappointment, with the team still to register a point. Defender Gregor Murray admitted, “It’s not been the fastest of starts to the season.”
The Beavers versus Sheffield Tuesday game began with Tuesday’s Ethan Mullens curling a shot straight from kick-off into the top right-hand corner. The Beavers came firing back and soon held a commanding lead. At 4-2, the crowd saw a Sunday League one-in-a-million. A top corner bicycle kick. Its scorer: Haakon Hoegh. I would be reporting it with excitement, dear reader, if it hadn’t been my failed clearance attempt that put it on a plate for him. Fair play, Haakon, fair play. Tuesday rallied, but the Beavers held on to win 6-5.
This Sunday, despite being Raisin, games are currently due to go ahead. This could be very interesting indeed …
