Fullerton College returned to Sherbeck Field with a dominant performance against Santiago Canyon College on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The Hornets had nine different players score their goals as they ended the game 9-0, their largest winning margin of the season.
The Hornets started the game in full control of the ball. By the sixth minute, forward Miguel Rodas attempted a shot on target that was ultimately saved by Hawks’ goalkeeper Elijah Richardson. It didn’t take long, however, for the Hornets to score their first goal as Michael Espinoza assisted midfielder Anthony Aguirre in the 11th minute. The Hornets did not back down and continued to attack as they retained possession, including two goals in thirty seconds by Nathan Ramirez and Mina Besada, making the game 4-0 in just thirty minutes.
Fullerton College Men’s Soccer Head Coach Greg Aviles praised his team for focusing on the smaller details of the game and their execution in scoring these goals.

“I think breaking the game into smaller portions and focusing on smaller minutes of time allowed us to progress throughout the game. Just doing that over and over again allowed us to sustain consistency,” said Aviles.
Santiago Canyon attempted their first shot, but it was ultimately saved by Hornets’ goalkeeper Josh Navarro. Fullerton continued their momentum by trying to maintain possession as much as they could, and two additional goals were scored, including a set-piece goal from a corner kick by midfielder Jaiden Duran that helped give centre-back Bryant Polmounter a header for the Hornets, right before the first half ended, 6-0.

“I think that was a good cross. Obviously, I got it to my team’s head, and he [Polmounter] headed it in. We haven’t scored a set-piece goal like that, so I think it was a big goal for us,” said Duran.
Following the second half, Fullerton continued their attacking style of play and went on to score three more goals as the crowd celebrated each goal with cheers that never went down. Finally, Fullerton broke through Santiago Canyon’s defense and ended the game with 28 shots and only one save needed throughout the entire 90 minutes. The Hornets also had 11 corners compared to the Hawks’ zero.
Aviles and Duran both acknowledged that the game went well for them and hope to continue this run for future games.
“I think communication helped us a lot because it helps us with how we move, how we get the ball, how we pass the ball around, and how we attack to get the most,” said Duran.
Fullerton hopes to continue their streak as they face off against Orange Coast at Sherbeck Field once again on Friday, Oct. 16. Game time is at 5:00 p.m. PST.
