San Francisco State University’s women’s soccer team continued its rough season on Friday evening, losing against California State University, Stanislaus.
The Gators have faced the Stanislaus Warriors in 23 matchups since 2007, with only two wins in 2018 and 2021.

In their conference, the Gators have one win and six losses. The team’s sole conference win was against Menlo last week, where they scored two of their three conference goals. Including a lone goal against Cal Poly Pomona, the Gators’ have scored three goals in comparison to 18 opponent goals in conference play.
In the first 15 minutes of the game, the Gators and Warriors were even, going back and forth with no shots on goal. It wasn’t until the 17th minute when the Warriors sent a free kick from the half line into the Gators’ box, pulling ahead for an early lead of 1-0.
Assistant coach Domenique Kastl sees the team’s record with Stanislaus as a challenge that is equally mental and physical.
“I think it continues to be a matter of not being able to calm ourselves in the moments we need to,” Kastl said. “We’re giving away balls without pressure.”
Kastl believes the team needs heightened engagement in high-pressure moments as a way to produce routinely intentional play.
Entering the game with a losing record against Stainslaus, first-year forward Elliana Lawrence saw the team’s record as a motivator.

“Going in losing, there’s a lot of frustration,” Lawrence said. “You gotta be grateful that you’re in the game and grateful to play soccer. You just have to keep working.”
The Gators continued their fight as every time Stanislaus maintained possession SF State was there to challenge 50/50 balls and 1v1s; however, the Warriors fought to keep their lead.Similar to their first goal, Stanislaus increased their lead to 2-0 in the 31st minute with a scoring free kick..
Going into the second half 2-0, SF State kept pressing the Warriors as it led to a mistake where junior forward Emily Gehrlein-Allen capitalized on for shot off from outside the box in the 46th minute. However, the efforts weren’t enough as the Warriors would take advantage of moments that SF State would not catch up on being one step ahead to score two more in the 44th minute and the 51st, ending the game 4-0.
Despite the Gator’s loss, third-year midfielder Natalie Ortiz sees the game as another opportunity for building rhythm.
“The whole time we really gave effort. Although we didn’t get any shots on frame, we really kept trying to fight to get some goals,” Ortiz said. “It is what it is. We’ll come back.”
Throughout the game, SFSU struggled offensively, with only six shots on goal all game. Kastl mentioned the team’s younger players can use the momentum transitioning out of their final games of the season to finish strong.
First-year defender, Alyssa Stoner, sees the team’s loss as potential to refine their game.
“There’s definitely still more points on the table for us,” Stoner said. “We’re taking some unfortunate losses, and we’re working on cleaning up the little mistakes and focusing on the bigger picture.”
