Kentucky teams went 6-0 at home this weekend. On Friday, Kentucky volleyball swept LSU, and women’s soccer upset No. 25 Texas 3-2. On Saturday, the football team upset No. 10 LSU in overtime, and rifle defeated Murray State, 4724-4702. To cap off the weekend, baseball took down Xavier 15-11 in an exhibition, and volleyball ended the weekend the way it started, with a win over Ole Miss. Not only are Kentucky athletics teams seeing success, but they are also supporting each other. Coaches and players have been all over campus attending other teams’ games and showing their support. During Kentucky volleyball games, multiple athletes and coaches have shown face in the stands. From the swim and dive team attending in full uniform against Louisville, to basketball and football players showing up to games throughout the year, the support has been clear. At the LSU football game alone, women’s basketball coach Kenny Brooks, men’s basketball coach Mark Pope and baseball coach Nick Mingione were all there, along with many of their players. When Kentucky won against the Tigers, new athletic director J Batt was one of the first people to storm the field. With many Kentucky teams having great seasons so far, their success seems to motivate other programs and give them an extra edge to earn big wins of their own. “I think it just kind of feeds into everyone. Whenever you know a certain sport has a great win, you know everyone’s kind of like, ooh, like we can do that too,” setter Kassie O’Brien said. “And so I think it’s awesome just to be able to go off that win.” Not only are they showing support by attending games, but they are also showing support at press conferences and on social media. “I can’t talk to tell you how many coaches said they’re going to be here today, and it’s just awesome because I know how busy everybody is because we’re busy too in the off season,” volleyball coach Craig Skinner said. “So just really thankful to be part of this, you know, fan base and athletic department.” The Kentucky athletic department has built a close community, and its fall sports teams have been off to great starts, earning big win after big win. Athletes have built relationships through programs like Fellowship of Christian Athletes and other opportunities at Kentucky. Just last week, Mingione hosted an FCA event at his house for athletes from across Kentucky to attend. “Yeah, we have a great community of athletes here, and I think we all kind of lean on each other, and we all love each other, and we like to go and watch each other play,” O’Brien said. Kentucky’s success this fall has shown that the athletic department is about more than just winning games. With athletes, coaches, and teams supporting one another, this could lead to a special year for Kentucky athletics all around.
