Anna Kelles, Democrat
State Assemblymember Anna Kelles is running unopposed in New York state’s 125th District election, which includes Tompkins County and southwest Cortland County. Kelles was first elected in 2020 and was reelected in 2022 and 2024. Before becoming an assemblymember, Kelles was a member of the Tompkins County Legislature for five years. Born and raised in Tompkins County, Kelles graduated from Binghamton University with a dual bachelor’s degree in biology and environmental studies.
Much of Kelles’ major legislative work has focused on environmental protection. She has sponsored and passed a moratorium on New York state cryptocurrency mining operations. According to her website, Kelles plans to make the largest polluters fund emission reductions, grid updates and efficiency improvements. Kelles’ website said she believes a transition toward renewable energy sources will lower the cost of electric bills for New Yorkers.
Kelles supports the New York Health Act, a proposed piece of legislation which would provide universal coverage without premiums, deductibles, copays or restrictive provider networks. She also wants to ensure healthcare for underserved rural communities who struggle to get care regardless of their insurance status.
According to her website, Kelles has committed to protecting immigrant communities by calling for an end to state and local law enforcement cooperation with ICE and guaranteeing the right to legal representation in immigration court.
