Mountaineers look to surf on the turf against Chanticleers Categories: Football Sports Mountaineers look to surf on the turf against Chanticleers  Malachi Lytton, Reporter October 14, 2026 Anna Milewicz App State football heads south, taking on Coastal Carolina University in its second conference game of the season. The Mountaineers sit at 3-2, coming off consecutive losses, most recently to Old Dominion University.  With the final score being 10-3, the Black and Gold played in extremely rainy conditions as the outskirts of Hurricane Isaias hit Boone. The match was a sloppy affair with programs struggling to muster much offense.  “We did everything you can to get ready for a rain game as far as wet balls and all those other things,” said Head Coach Dowell Loggains. “We didn’t handle those conditions well enough, so from that standpoint, anytime we win, my view is the players played well; anytime we lose, it’s on me.” The Mountaineers move forward to the next challenge in the Chanticleers, who won their most recent contest against Marshall University 27-21 after losing three straight games. Coastal Carolina has faced the likes of West Virginia University, University of Delaware and Liberty University. The Chanticleers are 1-1 in conference play, dropping to Georgia Southern University. The Chanticleers are led by quarterback Deuce Bailey, who poses as a dual-threat with his air attack and running ability. Bailey currently leads the Sun Belt Conference in passing touchdowns with 13. Coach Loggains has been impressed with the showcase of Bailey’s game.  “Deuce is a different player. This guy got some Houdini qualities: He’s able to escape, he’s making jump passes; it’s fun to watch. It’s also something to get ready for. I feel good about where we’re at as a defensive squad,” Loggains said. “We’ve got to be disciplined in our pass rush lanes because he can extend plays backwards, climbing the pocket; it becomes a different stress.”  The App State offense looks to limit turnovers against the Coastal Carolina defensive unit, which is near the top of the conference in forcing turnovers. They have the third-most interceptions in the conference at 6 and are tied for first in forced fumbles and recoveries.  “They’ve got a corner, Travis Roman, and their pass rusher is as good as anyone we’ve seen on tape this year. You better have a plan when you have those two elite players at the first level and third level of your defense,” Loggains said. “When you have those pieces like in the situations of third down, two-minute, the red zone, it makes your defense better because you can get to the quarterback with a four-man rush, you could put a guy on an island or take away their best player and take away half the field.” There’s slight uncertainty at the quarterback position as senior quarterback Malachi Singleton sustained an injury in the final drive of the game against ODU. His status for the game remains questionable until game day approaches.  The Mountaineers have lost four straight games against the Chanticleers and will look to end the streak in hostile territory and an environment like no other. The contest will take place Friday at 8 p.m. and will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
