Texas State junior defensive lineman Jo’Lasion Landry (6) chases SDSU quarterback, Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026, at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, Calif.
Coming off a much needed bye week, the Texas State Bobcats enter their second game of Pac-12 play looking to get a bad taste out of their mouth with a home matchup against the Colorado State Rams at 7 p.m. this Thursday at UFCU Stadium.
The Bobcats (2-3, 0-1 Pac-12) are seeking to get their first in-conference victory after a loss to a depleted San Diego State Aztecs squad, a game in which they blew a 14-point lead they held at half in large part thanks to issues involving special teams.
“We played pretty well in the first half, and in the second half just didn’t play winning football,” head coach G.J Kinne said during a press conference on Oct. 11. “We had more special teams mistakes and errors for a year in one quarter.”
Also coming off a bye week, the Rams (2-3, 0-1 Pac-12) are looking to snap a three-game losing skid with the latest loss coming from a 56-26 blowout loss to the emerging Oregon State Beavers.
Despite averaging 531.6 total yards, the Bobcats’ offense has been prone to mistakes with a combined eight turnovers over their three losses.
In spite of the mistakes, they’ve consistently shown the ability to move down the field behind a powerful one-two punch at running back, but the Bobcats will be without freshman running back Davian Jackson as he was listed “Out” according to the Pac-12 Player Availability Reports.
Senior Torrence Burgess Jr., who’s averaged 7.3 yards per carry this season and recorded a run of at least 65 yards in three different games, will have a much heavier load alongside the possibility of seeing a variety of players getting touches.
The Rams have had issues lately as well, giving up at least 40 points in each of their last three games.
Colorado State’s struggle to defend the pass could provide an opportunity for sophomore quarterback Brad Jackson to connect with his receiving corps for explosive plays.
It should be noted that the ‘Cats will be in a unique position facing a defense that recently relieved defensive coordinator Tyson Summers of play-calling duties during its loss to Oregon State and inevitably parting ways with him after the game’s conclusion.
The problem for the Rams, similar to the Bobcats, is the lack of complementary football as their offense has shown flashes of potential amid the recent struggles.
Colorado State QB K’saan Farrar, who has stepped in due to the injury of starter Hauss Hejny, will start Thursday. Farrar threw for 344 yards and two touchdowns in a 45-point performance against the UTSA Roadrunners.
Colorado State possesses a backfield duo as well, with Mel Brown and Durell Robinson leading the team in rushing yards. Brown averages 10 yards per carry and has three touchdowns on the year, while Robinson has handled the heavier workload with 62 carries and a team-high four touchdowns.
Rams WR RJ Vick leads the team with 24 catches and 367 receiving yards, and is coming off back to back games with more than 90 yards receiving.
“We’re going to play one of the better offenses we’ve played all year, I think [Colorado State], North Texas, UTSA are right there, these guys are really talented,” Kinne said.
Both Pac-12 teams possess the offensive firepower to light the scoreboard up despite being down a couple of key players. Thursday’s matchup could very well come down to which side can limit mistakes and get timely stops.
Texas State returns to San Marcos to open their first in-conference home slate against Colorado State at 7 p.m. this Thursday, Oct. 15 at UFCU Stadium. The game will be available to watch on the CBS Sports Network.
