Faculty of Engineering welcomes new students with three days of Freshers' Week activities
The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Malta welcomed its new cohort of students with a three-day Freshers' Week programme, held between 5 and 7 October 2026. The activities, organised by the Faculty’s Student-Staff Liaison Committee, were designed to help first-year students settle into university life, familiarise themselves with the Faculty, and begin building connections with fellow students and staff.
The programme opened with introductory sessions during which students met the Dean, Heads of Department, course coordinators and other members of staff. These sessions provided an overview of the Faculty's academic structure, study programmes, assessment procedures and support services, while encouraging students to take an active role in their university experience.
A student organisations fair provided an opportunity for students to discover the many extracurricular activities and initiatives available to them. Representatives from student organisations, engineering teams, professional engineering groups, and university student support services introduced their activities and explained how students could get involved in projects, competitions, international exchanges and other opportunities beyond the classroom.
Alongside the information sessions, the Faculty organised interactive activities to encourage students to explore their new surroundings and get to know one another.
A Faculty-wide treasure hunt took participants through laboratories and offices, where they encountered challenges involving engineering concepts, practical tasks and questions about members of staff. The activity offered students an informal introduction to the Faculty's facilities and the people they will encounter throughout their studies.
Students and staff were also invited to take part in Murder at the Book Club, an interactive mystery in which participants became detectives, gathering clues and piecing together evidence to solve a fictional murder. The activity provided a light-hearted exercise in observation, reasoning and teamwork.
The programme reflected the Faculty's commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive learning environment, while highlighting that university life extends beyond lectures and laboratories. Through a combination of academic orientation, social interaction and hands-on activities, students were encouraged to develop a sense of belonging and to make the most of the opportunities available to them.
The Faculty of Engineering thanks all academic, technical and administrative staff, student organisations and volunteers who contributed to the organisation of the programme.
We extend a warm welcome to all our new students and wish them every success in their studies and in the years ahead.
