Despite it being 9 p.m. in Austin, the sun had just set in the 1980s Los Angeles-themed backdrop of Austin City Limits Live. As a countdown hit zero, an image of a car appeared, only to glitch and drop to the bottom of the screen. With a flash of pyrotechnics, pop singer Kylie Cantrall emerged out of the “debris,” previewing her dynamic yet chaotic popstar persona.
Following the release of her album Valley Girl Problems, the Disney actress and singer brought her Valley Girl Problems Tour to Austin on Tuesday, drawing young fans in Y2K-inspired red and pink outfits.
Dressed in a cropped pink tee and cutout jeans, Cantrall sauntered across the stage with pink trash bags for “Boy is Yours” off her first album B.O.Y. as the audience chanted the catchy pre-chorus, “One girl’s trash is another girl’s trash too.” After an interlude celebrating her valley girl roots, she emerged from a quick-change booth for “Grwm,” a preppy girls’ night out anthem.

Cantrall shrugged off situationships and melted lip gloss in the catchy but short track “Valley Girl Problems.” Alongside her dancers, the singer took a moment to teach the audience the viral dance trend to the song, even recording a dance video on a fan’s phone.
“And if you post it, girl, make sure you tag me,” Cantrall said. “Because you know I’m gonna hit that repost button.”
After cheekily showing off her ex-boyfriend’s hat, Cantrall adorned her own sparkly one for the satirical “Boy For a Day.” Cantrall performed another interlude, where she expressed her gratitude for the city that raised and inspired her, Tarzana, California. However, she quickly transitioned into the unapologetic “Raised by Rihanna,” where she proclaimed the award-winning singer shaped her personality.
Songs like “Put the Record On” and “Pretty Privilege” highlighted Cantrall’s vocals, while “Closet” showcased her powerful dancing. After a compilation of old performance videos, the spoken word “Intro” asked audiences to “come together as one.”
Following the storyline of “Valley Girl Problems,” Cantrall included the spoken word interludes “The Problem” and “The Answer,” hinting at the alleged betrayal of her ex-boyfriend cheating on her with her best friend. She followed it with “Carrie Bradshaw,” where she danced around a rotating mirror.
Cantrall repeatedly celebrated the fans in the crowd, expressing her gratitude for their support throughout all her different phases. The singer even invited two original “QTs,” the nickname for her fans, to come on stage to play a trivia game based on her, awarding the winner with free Jingle Ball tickets.
The acoustic section of the show connected strongly with the audience, with cheers for the romantic deep cut “Oversized” and solemn sing-a-longs to the deeply personal “Space Between.”
“I think that’s the best part about writing music is that you know it can heal the person that’s making it,” Cantrall said. “But hopefully it can heal someone that’s out there listening.”
The night culminated in Cantrall revealing her “one last card to play” by performing “Red,” a nod to her Descendants character of the same name, accompanied by flashing LEDs and fiery visuals. Cantrall then took the stage in a denim hat for “Denim,” delivering smooth choreography before closing with the hypnotic self love song “Goodie Bag.”
