WKU Football made the trek down to Huntsville, Texas on Oct. 14 against the Sam Houston Bearkats, finally delivering a 16-3 win on the road, marking the team’s first in four contests.
Away from the friendly confines of Houchens-Smith Stadium, the Hilltoppers had yet to prove their ability to perform on the road.
WKU controlled the pace of the game from start to finish, holding the Bearkats to just three points, after yet another impressive defensive showing.
The Hilltopper defense carried over their success from its 34-13 win against Missouri State on Oct. 8, stepping up in crucial spots and limiting Sam Houston to just two third-down conversions.
WKU was stifling at the line of scrimmage, sacking sophomore Bearkats quarterback Landyn Locke twice in the first half and containing the Bearkats rushing attack to just 65 yards.
Senior Quarterback Brock Glenn was unable to get going through the air, completing 14 of his 30 pass attempts, but left his mark on the game with his legs, rushing for 54 yards on 22 attempts.
The Hilltoppers utilized six total rushers, including freshman running back Le’Kamren Meadows, whose 32 yard strike set up a field goal that extended WKU’s second quarter lead to 10-0.
Although Glenn lacked efficiency passing the football, the veteran quarterback was able to spread the ball around, with four different receivers recording 20-plus yards.
The Hilltoppers were a perfect two-for-two in the redzone, but were forced to kick three field goals. Glenn found junior tight end Coleson Arends for the lone 24-yard score, as the Hilltoppers’ red zone struggles kept Sam Houston in the game.
WKU scraped and clawed their way down the field despite their lackluster air attack, outgaining the Bearkats by 99 total yards.
The Hilltoppers relied on their defense down to the last snap, proving they can be relied upon to win games, as the Hilltoppers cruised to a much-needed road victory to advance to 2-1 in conference play.
Helton and WKU will have a long break after battling through a short week, as they prepare for yet another Conference USA clash at home against Delaware on Oct. 27.
The game will be streamed on CBS, kicking off at 6 p.m.
