Another successful game at the plate for the Shockers led them to a 6-1 victory over Emporia State.
In the bottom of the first, it was sophomore second baseman Kammie Smith that got things going with a single. Smith stayed hot all day, adding two more singles and a two-run double in her last three at-bats.
Senior infielder Trinity Allen drove in a run when she reached on an overthrow by the shortstop. Allen tallied six RBIs in four plate appearances, and two of her three hits were home runs.
“Going into any fall ball games, I try not to think too much into things,” Allen said. “Really just looking for a pitch somewhere on the plate, getting a good swing off and that’s really what I did today.”
In the four hole, junior catcher Gabby Scott went four for four with four RBIs. Scott added a walk in her last plate appearance.
“I think we’re just able to take the pressure off of each other,” Scott said. “I don’t have to necessarily feel all the pressure because I know that I have however many people behind me (who) can do it so I’m not worried about it.”
The Shocker pitching staff bounced back after a rough outing against Oklahoma State last weekend. The hurlers had nine walks against the Cowgirls but allowed just two to Emporia State on Sunday.
“Yeah, it makes a huge difference,” head coach Kristi Bredbenner said. “Now that we aren’t giving up the walks, but we are giving up the hits, it’s about finding those corners and maybe working the knees a little bit more.”
Wichita State will travel to Kansas City to face off against Missouri at 4 p.m. Saturday at Legends Field.
“You know, it’ll be a big test for us on Saturday,” Bredbenner said. “They have some pretty substantial power hitters that we’ll face, so we’ll have to make that adjustment this week in practice.”
