WKU film department casts community members for short films WKU film department casts community members for short films Maha Salem, News Reporter October 11, 2026 Lindsey McIntosh WKU Film hosts open auditions with a given script to the school for extras and actors in Jody Richards Hall on Friday, Oct. 9, 2026. WKU Bachelor of Fine Arts film students took over Jody Richards Hall on Friday and Saturday, holding open auditions for community members interested in acting for student films. Sophomore film student Jesse Dixon said the auditions are open to anyone in the Bowling Green area. He explained that the department videotapes each audition and uploads it to a pool for directors to choose from when they begin their projects next semester. Each audition is for a role in a student production next semester. The projects are part of the upperclassmen film curriculum and begin annually in each student’s second year. Participants will be contacted in the spring by casting directors once roles have been decided. Each film will premiere at the White Squirrel Film Festival next semester. Participants entered JRH between 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on both days. A group of students met them by the stairs and directed them toward the script area across from the photo gallery. All the scripts were public and from classic Hollywood movies, like “When Harry Met Sally…” and “Mean Girls.” When they felt ready for their cold-read audition, participants went upstairs to classrooms on the second and third floors. Met by student directors, they faced the camera and began their monologues. Chase Mills, a freshman film major, read off Cady Heron’s lines from the three-way phone call scene in “Mean Girls.” The student casting director on shift, Christian Pastura, gave him the direction to be more cautious and closed-off. Mills read off his part again with the new guidance and thanked Pastura for his time. All individuals who auditioned were given a specialty purple TopperFella, called a FilmFella. “I really just came for the TopperFella,” said Mills. Sav Covey, a recent film production graduate, auditioned as well. She said that she auditioned because she wanted to help other film students. She said that she was nervous to read for her character, Ava from “Big Brother.” “I’ve never acted in films; only produced them,” she said. Pastura said that he is excited about this production, as next semester will be his first time doing the project. “I really like doing stuff like this,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun.” 0 Like This Story Share on Facebook Share on X Email this Story Print this Story Tags: act acting actor audition auditions film white squirrel film festival wku film More to Discover More in News / Academics Student creativity celebrated at art show reception Cadence at the Colonnades: WKU Jazz Band hosts outdoor concert History Department to host Battle Threads lecture Global Learning without the guesswork: WKU helps students take the First Step GFCB to invite John Taft for business lecture series SGA senate complete following fall election About the Contributors Maha Salem, Staff Reporter Maha Salem is a news reporter for the College Heights Herald, and this is her first year on staff.
