As the Appalachian Mountains turn to orange and gold, the days approaching Halloween grow shorter and shorter. For those looking for a captivating, kid-friendly activity, the annual Boone BOO! event is being held in downtown Boone Oct. 31 from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
“We’d love local families to come enjoy our downtown area,” said Lane Moody, the downtown development director of the Town of Boone.

Boone BOO! is a safe, family-friendly event hosted by the Town of Boone Cultural Resources Department and the Downtown Boone Development Association.
Each organization values preservation and ensures history, art and culture thrive in the community. Participating merchants will be handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, and King Street will be filled with Halloween music and larger-than-life inflatables.

The Jones House Cultural Center will be hosting community organizations on the lawn, which will have on-theme games, and a kid-friendly haunted house. The yearly costume contest will be held in front of the Jones House on King Street starting at 5 p.m., with the lineup starting at 4:30 p.m.
“The costume contest is where we shine,” Moody said. She said after Hurricane Helene hit Boone in 2024, Walmart was forced to close its doors due to damage, and it was one of the only places in Boone that sold Halloween costumes. Moody remembered that after the hurricane, she saw some of the most creatively handmade costumes she had ever seen.

The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts will be participating in the event as well. Syd Tidwell, a junior biology major and staff member of the Turchin Center, said the center is handing out candy as well as providing Halloween-themed arts and crafts for the kids.
The Turchin Center will also be dressing up its polar bear sculpture,“Tetness, The Polar Bear,” in a spooky costume and encouraging visitors to participate in activities and take a picture with the sculpture.

For children who have allergies, many businesses, including the Turchin Center, will be handing out non-candy treats as well as candy that doesn’t contain peanuts.
Parking will be available on Queen Street, the lower lot of First Baptist Church, App State’s Peacock Lot and in the Watauga County Courthouse parking deck. For more details on the event, visit the Jones House website.
