Northeastern unveils statue of 16-foot hare outside ISEC Northeastern unveils statue of 16-foot hare outside ISEC Caileigh Crane, news correspondent October 12, 2026 Margot Murphy Students navigate toward class by ISEC and EXP Oct. 7. Northeastern installed “Large Left-Handed Drummer” Oct. 6. Northeastern installed a bronze-cast statue of a 16-foot hare between ISEC and EXP Oct. 6, the latest addition to the university’s collection of public art.  The statue, which weighs 2,600 pounds, depicts the figure of a hare with coiling legs holding a drum and drumstick, according to Northeastern Global News, or NGN. Known as “Large Left-Handed Dummer,” the statue is on loan from London’s Waddington Custot contemporary art gallery.  Created by Welsh-born artist Barry Flanagan in 2006, the statue is a larger version of his original 1997 “Left-Handed Drummer,” which is owned by a private collector, according to Flanagan’s estate’s website. It is one of Flanagan’s several hare-themed sculptures, with one of his most well-known works being the 1979 “Leaping Hare.” (Flanagan passed in 2009.) Sotheby’s, an auction house and art marketplace, estimates the statue is worth $700,000 to $900,000. The statue is the university’s latest addition to its Public Art Initiative of over 30 murals and sculptures, according to the initiative’s website.  “Our campus is a canvas, enriched by artists from every corner of the world,” Northeastern President Joseph E. Aoun told NGN. “Public art doesn’t just decorate a space; it sparks dialogue, challenges perspectives, and connects us to one another. We’re delighted to add this statue to that story.” The new installation comes 18 months after the removal of “Rooted,” a highly contested piece of public art, from Krentzman Quad in 2025. The Student Government Association voted to remove the piece after pushback from students, with many pointing out it obstructed the view of Ell Hall. 0 Like This Story Share on Facebook Share on X Email this Story Print this Story Tags: art About the Contributor Margot Murphy, Photo Editor Constantly with her camera, Margot Murphy is a fourth-year journalism major with a minor in psychology and photo editor of The News.
